2016 in Lolita Fashion and 2017 Predictions.

At the start of this year I made a post trying to predict 2016 Trends in Lolita fashion.

I guessed that "1. OTT will get even more OTT"
Which it didn't, I don't think.
2016 was kind of strange, in that there was no obvious OTT accessory that was most popular. Previously, Madonna crowns were THE big thing, and before that Staffs and Sceptres were everywhere. For a little while I though it might be decorative wings, but that realy didn't take off the same way that other OTT trends did.
Perhaps I just haven't been paying close enough attention.

(Wings from Taobao brand L-Season)

Second, I guessed that "2. Simple OldSchool will also come back."

Which it kind of did? I feel like there has been a lot more oldshcool lolita outfits appearing on Closet of Frills this year than I've seen in the past few years.

Third, I guessed that "3. Mainstream Shoes" would be more popular than Lolita ones.
And I'm honestly not sure if that happened or not.
I don't think it did. Not really.

FOURTH, I predicted that "4. Guro" would become more popular.

It was entirely wishful thinking at the time, but personally, I found this year was great for Guro Lolita.

"Menhera" fashion really took more hold in western communities this year, and a lot of that trickled down into Lolita and have us more interest in Guro than I've ever seen before.

On top of that, lots of brands put out explicitly Guro prints this year. (Especially around Halloween).
Taobao brands in particular released a lot of stuff I liked.

(DrJelly, upcoming guro print)

(FoxFeather's Vampire Ville Print)

The indie brand Violet Fane, who I have postyed about before because I own their "asylum" print,
released the "Posession" print.

(Violet Fane's Posession print)

And the japanese brand Royal Princess Alice gave us Dark Night Hopsital.
I've written about Royal Princess Alice before too, as I own their Ghost Marie print.

(Royal Princess Alice, Dark Knight Hospital)
I really feel like Guro and horror themed fashion is getting more attention than it used to, and I hope this continues!
I had plenty of opportunities to wear GuroLolita outfits of my own too.
After starting 2016 with my Guro Wardrobe Post, I decided to focus on my favourite substyle even more than usual.

I even had the opportunity to do a Photoshoot in a Guro lolita outfit, again wearing the Asylum print.

The fifth thing I predicted was 5. Non-Lolita Brands worn with Lolita outfits.
Which, again, I'm not sure if that happened more than usual or not.
I do feel like non-lolita japanese clothing brands are getting a little more attention than they used to within lolita fashion circles. But not a lot.

In that post at the start of the year, I also made note that in 2014 I thought that Goth would take over Sweet as the big lolita style.
And in 2012 I thought that Dandy and Ouji styles would become more popular.

In hindsight, I feel I was right about Goth gaining popularity from 2014 onwards.
My 2012 predictions on Ouji was pure wishful thinking.

But, I feel like this year I saw a lot more ouji and boystyle outfits than ever before.
It's still not equally as popular as Lolita, but it's definately not the minor sub-style it was in 2012.

Again, it's been mainly Taobao brands that have been making this happen, there have been a LOT of great ouji style pieces released by them.

My predictions for 2017 is that Ouji will become more popular than ever.
At least, I hope it does, since my everyday style is gothic dandy.

and, Ruffs and frilly neck pieces in general will be the OTT accessory of choice.

What do you think will be 2017's Lolita trend?

2017 New Year's Resolutions

Back at the start of this year I made a "2016 New Years Resolutions" video, and thought it'd be interesting to look back over that, and see how well I actually did.
And of course, make some new resolutions for 2017.

I surprised myself by having actually achieved quite a lot of the things I wanted to do!

My 2016 Resolutions were:
1. Make a video every week
2. Learn to draw faces.
3. Clear out my wardrobe.
4. Go out more.

The only one of these I didn't do was "Learn to draw faces".
Because I am faceblind, it's hard to know what makes a face look like a face. But I'll keep trying.

My 2017 Resolutions are going to be:

1. Focus on Quality over Quantity.
Basically, keep making videos and drawing, but do it more slowly and focus on making them better rather than trying to just get them done every week.

2. Study.
Because I'm going to be a student again. I'm gonna need to study!

3. Refine my wardrobe.
I cleared out a lot last year, and there are still plenty of things I want to clear out, but there are also a lot of items I'd rather alter to fit me better so I can wear them more.

That's the plan for 2017!

Do you have any resolutions for next year?
Did you make any last year?
If you did, did you keep them?

Gothic Monster Outfit Planning

Since buying this Medusa scarf from Dangerous Nude while in Tokyo, I've been looking forward to pairing it with the skirt with the matching print I already had.
The scarf and boots make this a good winter co-ord.

This is the "Medusa" them outfit.

Blose: Bodyline
Scarf and Skirt: Dangerous Nude
Boots and Socks Offbrand

I've also been wanting to re-work this outfit that I wore to Louise's Photography gallery last year.

I really just went over the top with bat wings, and am considering this a Dracula Theme Outfit.

Skirt: Alice and the Pirates
Bag: Patchy
Shoes: Cloudberry lady
Headband: H+M
Jacket: Dracula Clothing

Accio Tokyo Review

"Accio Tokyo" used to be Tokyo Pirates, who I have used before a did a review of at the time. They were good then, so I felt safe enough using them now for this order.

I pre-ordered the Royal Princess Alice "Dark night Hospital" series hat and tights through Accio Tokyo on August 17th.
There was no problem at all with the process. It involved filling out a simple order form, then waiting for my invoice for the items.
The invoice was sent to me the next day, August 18th.

Then it was just a matter of waiting for the items to be released, at which point they would buy them for me and invoice me for the shipping price.
Exactly two months later they had my items and invoiced me the shipping fee on October 17th.

I got an email telling me my order had been shipped on October 19th, complete with tracking number.

And on November 11th, it arrived to me!

My items were packaged along with a piece of cardboard to prevent them getting crumpled in the mail.

There were absolutely no problems at all with my order, the whole process was very smooth.

I will almost certainly be using their service again some time.

Dangerous Halloween Candy Artwork

This week's art video is colouring the line art I did last week.

The concept behind this drawing was "Dangerous Halloween Candy", like the popular urban legends involving kids being given dangerous items along with their sweets.
I did the sketch for this last halloween, and waited a whole year to clean it up...
In that time I did some reading and found out that the urban legends are based on a true story...
(Do not click if you don't want to know... it's not a nice story)

This drawing is now my Halloween background image for the blog.

Feel free to use any of these as a wallpaper yourself if you like! If you do, I'd appreciate a link back here, or to my facebook Art Page.

Happy Halloween Month!

Vintage Doctor Makeup and Outfit

Here is the makeup and outfit I wore to the "Style Tribes" book launch last week!

Coat: Alice And the Pirates
Bag: Alice and the Pirates
Skirt: Violet Fane
Blouse and Detachable Collar: Metamorphose
Shoes: TopShop
Spats: Etsy
Glasses: Ebay (chain added by hand)

I wanted a more vintage doctor theme to this outfit, than the usual creepy-cute vibe of Guro lolita.

The socks, ear cuffs and chain accessories are all hand made. Versions of these items are for sale on my Etsy store LowDownAndDandy!
